Breathe the fresh mountain air. Explore the Adriatic coastal trails. Sip wines steeped in history and winemaking tradition. Meander down cobbled streets along dry-stacked walls and buildings. Marvel at the stone towers with their glorious rustic rooftops in terracotta from serene vista points. These were the thoughts that ran through my mind as I contemplated making my move to the central Italian region of Umbria. I discovered province of Perugia by chance after some basic research for homes within my budget. When I arrived, I was mesmerized by the bucolic scene and on my train ride back to Roma, I knew that is where I wanted to be. Having lived my entire life in foothills of Mt. Diablo in Northern California, I was so comfortable because the region seemed so familiar. We are situated in the geographic center of the country, practically equidistant between Roma and Firenze, and surrounded by the historic towns of this formerly papal state region that are connected by bucolic mountain highways. There is Assisi, Spoleto, and Orvieto to the south and to the north, Arezzo, Cortona, Città di Castello and Umbertide. To the east about 1 hour is the Adriatic coast and lovely historic towns like that of Ancona and Urbino. The region is wine producing and one could say is the little sister to Chianti and the Val d'Orcia. Some of the same principal varietals are grown like sangiovese, as well as the DOCG wine Sagrantino di Montefalco. The foods are fantastic with an abundance of truffle accented pasta dishes to pair with the majestic wines. I look forward to what Umbria has to offer and I welcome you to join me in my adventures along the way.
